Amsterdam apartment

Transforming a sizable but not spacious feeling apartment into a large open kitchen, living, dining space.

A single functional volume

Originally the apartment was home to three bedrooms and two bathrooms, divided over the two levels with the kitchen and dining space on the lower level and an upstairs living room. Together with the clients, we decided to do away with the bedroom and second bathroom on the lower level. This created the opportunity to transform the ‘boxed in’ lower level into one large open living area. To emphasis the openness, all functional elements such as the kitchen, toilet, laundry room and cabinet space are placed within a single piece of built in furniture. This plan also was conceived with the idea of not having to move any plumbing and mechanical elements.
